Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Since last week’s Generation Gap was an iconic GM muscle car, how about a not so iconic or muscular GM automobile for this week? With its fair share of ups and downs, the Buick Regal is undoubtedly a nameplate that has undergone a myriad of variations from gigantic luxo-barge to a quick muscle coupe to the representative car of old people and finally to the Euro style sports sedan that it is today. Which will you choose?
The options:
First Generation [1973 - 1977] and facelift
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Second Generation [1978 - 1987] and facelift
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Third Generation [1988 - 1996] and facelift

Fourth Generation [1997 - 2004]

Fifth Generation [2009 - Present] and facelift

1st - Love it. Classic American barge.
2nd - Neat. Still vintage technology, just in a smaller package. Unlike most, I’d prefer a regular Regal over a GN because possibility of V8 instead of definite V6. I prefer sound over a significant increase in power
3rd - EWWW WHAT HAPPENED
4th - *yawn*
5th - meh

Did you even have to ask? No one here is going to pass on the Grand National...

Though I will admit I like these. Though I read a Car & Driver review and the test car lunched an engine, so - once again - no, GM...just no...

Personally, I like them all, but the second gen is my favorite, because T-Type, Grand National, and GNX.

Wait what? That’s news...I had thought that it would be fun to do an Opel conversion and confuse everyone but after hearing that perhaps it’s not such a good idea to buy a Regal...

Nice commentary, but there are only five generations...

Well........ I guess I’ll go for the first gen with the facelift because it looks the best. Or maybe the second gen regal GNX.

GNX is the way to go. I’m surprised you didn’t go for the more sophisticated Opel Insignia-based edition...

Only if it’s a wagon and badged as an Opel.

Australia. The Insignia was fairly nice to be honest. Bit pricey for what it was though.

This is probably the ONLY car that I would vote for a 70s/80s version of - because Grand National.

Indeed.
I especially like the second set of taillights they had to install to make sure it complied with open-trunk lighting regs...
It seems Opel has a thing for these secondary lights since the Cascada has them also...I wonder how Audi skirts the issue since their SUVs use clamshell hatches as well?
I would assume it would be the bumper lamps but they never seem to light up...

Edit -just to be clear, I voted for the 2nd gen. The 1st gen facelift is a soulless abomination.

I’m surprised they don’t sell it as a Holden over there? Interesting...
Well, Consumer Reports (which as I’m sure you’ve heard about as the most boring and conservative publication ever to write about cars) has listed the new Regal as their top sports sedan, so that may either be a bad or good thing...

Opel had a go at entering the market here with the Corsa, Astra and Insignia. competing with VW.
They lasted 18 months and left telling customers that Holden will pick up the servicing and warranty before even telling Holden themselves. The remaining stock was sold through Holden dealers.
The OPC turbo one would be pretty good. The rest are a bit bleugh for me.

But in the states, can you get it in wagon form with AWD and manual?

Yeah, we get the OPC here as the Regal GS, not a bad driver from what I’ve heard...

We don’t get the super awesome OPC Touring here under any name, unfortunately...

I know, I was disappointed, myself. After being scarred for life after owning that GMC, I was willing to at least entertain the thought.

What? No shots of the 2nd Gen Regal sedan and wagon?
I voted 1st Gen. Because optional 455 V8.

Heh... just adding my $0.02. It’s interesting because the only photos of Regal coupes you showed were 2nd Gen. The rest were sedans only. Thought I’d work the wagon in there, too.

I figured the coupes were the most recognized of the second gen, and some of the others had no coupe version so I stuck with 4 doors on the rest...

You figured right. The G-body Regal only came as a sedan for 3 years and the wagon for only 2.
However, I think the 1st gen was better known (and sold) as a coupe. And the 3rd gen coupe debuted 2 years before the sedan.
